Christmas Sayings, Quotes, and Jokes for Cards

Please browse our collection of Christmas sayings.

The first of billions of Christmas card sayings was "A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You". That is what was printed on the first ever Christmas card, sent by Sir Henry Cole, the founder of the Victoria and Albert Museumin London. That was a fine sentiment - direct and to the point - here you will find a selection of other ways to get your message across. All are free for your non-commercial use - Merry Christmas.

The Christmas Life
by Wendy Cope

Bring in a tree, a young Norwegian spruce,
Bring hyacinths that rooted in the cold.
Bring winter jasmine as its buds unfold -
Bring the Christmas life into this house.

Bring red and green and gold, bring things that shine,
Bring candlesticks and music, food and wine.
Bring in your memories of Christmas past.
Bring in your tears for all that you have lost.

Bring in the shepherd boy, the ox and ass,
Bring in the stillness of an icy night,
Bring in the birth, of hope and love and light.
Bring the Christmas life into this house.

Christmas Joke
One Christmas, Bob and his wife Mary decided to spend the festive season in Russia. While they were there, they befriended a local named Rudolf.

One day they were sitting outside a cafe drinking coffee, when Bob noticed something falling from the sky.

"How lovely," he said, "It's starting to snow"

Rudolf corrected him and said "That's not snow, it's rain."

Bob tried to argue, insisting that it was snow, but Rudolf insisted it was rain.

Eventually, Mary intervened.

"Don't argue with him," she said. "Rudolf the red knows rain, dear"

We also suggest you check out this great version of Twas the Night Before Christmas. It has been updated, just a little, to make it more accessible to modern children - and is ideal as a Christmas message.
