<<>>

There is a world record that
I think that you will break
Some time in the next few years -
It's "candles on a cake."

 <<>>

You're known and respected
For your love of thrift,
And so, to honor this, I have
Not got you a gift.

<<>>

You've had many many birthdays,
Too many for me to mention,
But there are still one or two more
Before you start to draw your pension.

<<>>

I believe <team name> will win the league.
I believe climate change will work out fine.
I believe every politician's promise.
I believe that you are twenty nine.

<<>>

Let's celebrate your birthday.
Let's drink 'til we fall over.
Let's try not to think about
Tomorrow's big hangover.

<<>>

Getting old is no fun
Don't let it make you cross.
Have a few beers and soon
You will not give a toss.

<<>>

Last year- twenty candles,
That does not sound a lot.
But that was not the whole cake,
Just on the slice I got.

Have you ever considered writing a birthday poem?  It is really not as difficult as you might think.  Just think of a joke or sentiment you want to make (see elsewhere on this site ideas) and turn it into a four-line verse.  There are only two rules.  First, it should rhyme – usually this means the last syllable of lines two and four should rhyme.  It would be even better if lines one and three rhyme also, but this is optional.  Secondly, it should scan – this means that the rhythm should be right.  Real poets insist on following certain rules, but for the purposes of a birthday card, if the rhythm sounds okay when you read it out loud, then it is fine.
